Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Andropause, Testosterone Patches, Gel, Cream, Pills And Side Effects

Testosterone replacement therapy is often used to treat males who have low testosterone levels and those who suffer from Andropause, or the so-called male menopause. Testosterone is a hormone that is produced by both men and women; however, it is primarily produced by men. It enhances sex drive, energy, immune functions, and also helps prevent osteoporosis. Males who have normal testosterone levels are not advised to undergo testosterone replacement therapy.
Testosterone replacement therapy helps treat symptoms related to low testosterone levels, such as low sex drive, impotence, decreased bone density and muscle mass, and depression. Testosterone is also used to treat a condition known as hypogonadism, a condition in which men have abnormally low testosterone levels in their blood. The symptoms of hypogonadism include low sex drive, fatigue, and forgetfulness.
Testosterone replacement therapy can be administered in different ways. These include injections, testosterone patches, and testosterone gels. Testosterone injections are directly injected into the muscle at specific periods, while testosterone patches are applied directly to the skin of the testicles (scrotal patch) or to any part of the body. Testosterone gels, also known as Androgel, are applied to the skin once a day and are relatively more expensive than other forms of testosterone replacement therapy. Other forms of testosterone replacement therapy are testosterone cream and testosterone pills.
Several clinical trials have shown that testosterone replacement therapy has beneficial effects on men who have low levels of testosterone. These include: decrease in mood swings, increased mental and physical energy, better sleep quality, increased sex drive and better sexual performance, increase in lean body mass, and increased muscle strength. However, medical experts have also warn against the possible negative side effects that could result from improper testosterone therapy. These side effects include: fluid retention, liver toxicity, fertility problems, sleep apnea, enlarged breasts, polycythemia, and enlargement of the prostate.
Regular monitoring is crucial for men who undergo testosterone replacement therapy. Initial follow-up sessions should include thorough physical and psychological tests. These physical examinations include blood tests, liver function tests, and prostate examination. Psychological tests examine the patient's mood, sex drive, and emotional condition during testosterone replacement therapy.
