Hormone Imbalance: Progesterone, Estrogen, Symptoms, Causes And Treatments

Hormone imbalance typically occurs in middle-aged women and is characterized by disproportionate levels of progesterone and estrogen in the body. Women produce estrogen during the monthly menstrual cycle, while progesterone is produced during the ovulation period. Hormone imbalance occurs when the body fails to have an ovulation, which creates an absence of progesterone and dominance of estrogen. Failure to ovulate normally happens during premenopausal period, which is why hormone imbalance is dominant among women aged 30 to 40 years.

Keeping progesterone and estrogen levels balanced allows the body to work normally, especially since both hormones neutralize the functions of each other. However, if hormone imbalance occurs, the body tends to develop some abnormalities. Women with hormone imbalance are reported to have experienced dizziness, headache, saggy and wrinkly skin, urinary tract infection (UTI), weight gain, unexplained hair growth and hair loss, anxiety, depression, hot flashes, incontinence, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue, fibrocystic breasts, and breast and uterine cancers. When a woman experiences some of these symptoms, she is advised to consult a physician.

Scientifically, hormone imbalance is largely influenced by the abnormal levels of progesterone and estrogen in the body. However, women should be aware that there are still other causes of hormone imbalance. For example, a hysterectomy or hormone replacement therapy is believed to lower progesterone production. Other causes include contraceptive pills, household chemicals, and unhealthy foods.

Early detection and prompt treatment of hormone imbalance can increase a woman's chance of recovery. Normally, experts recommend natural progesterone supplements to balance the hormonal levels. These supplements often come in the form of cream, which should be administered in the body. Patients can also alleviate the condition by attending to the symptoms. Relaxation, regular exercise, and a health diet are all methods that can be used to improve health.

It is particularly important for women to be well informed of hormone imbalance because their functionality as an individual is adversely affected by this condition. It's safe to assume that if responded to as soon as it is detected, hormone imbalance cannot, in any way, hinder women's productivity.
